Entry #203: Ah, we meet again

It may be a general principle that the transcriptional targets of a signaling pathway is repressed in the absence of its signal. I read that line in some chemistry book and tried to place it in a social context. My thesis is that estranging from people is an authentic example of a weakening social fabric which leads to an intense attraction with the self. Never mind the friends, school, work, domestic chores, and...

And in the absence of activity there is a revival of inner thought, self-observation, and self-analysis. This is not a good way of attaching oneself to another. In a sense, we consist of large movements of centrifugal like bodies who disperse existence beyond our limits.

So to sit and contemplate and reflect is personal and egotistical. His passions produce nothing and so they are futile imaginings. And what he states is love is not so. It's a meditation on his love (my brain is hurting).

Egotistical bastard that makes others worry and the mere push for change of some sort is swept aside as if though he is that one person who could reflect on his own consciousness. It is impossible to produce action in a purely undetermined state!

So lad, your own wretched misery has been antiqued and studied. And I am not to blame.

Entry #180: The Wait

Dear dear dear!
A nervous palpitation and gentle shocking of the system combine to make me feel quite desperate for you now. Let's sit so we can see eye-to-eye (she swoons).

Entry #174: LIAR

I am obsessed with the scientific study of the human mind, so when HE MENTIONED that someone wrote an op-ed on this, I went online in anticipation...

The op-ed entitled "The Luxurious Growth" appeared in the New York Times yesterday. In it, editor David Brooks writes that science has been slow to connect A to Z. This is because there are factors including B, C, D... Y.

This stuff was written about years ago by Matt Ridley in the book, "Nature Via Nurture: Genes, Experience, and what Makes Us Human." BOO. I thought it would be well thought out w/ new arguments n stufffffz!!

Entry #172: Transformation

The wind at dawn shakes trees bare and brings smells of salty ocean.

A woman and her dog step out onto the front yard. The dog yelps with excitement.

A cool breeze passes.

She is staring at her car, wanting so much to drive into the night, over the hill and across state lines. And then she will pull over and rest, only to drive again until she sees the view of a foreign city.

It would be a city that held in its possession every single one of her much beloved furniture that she had to throw out over the years. And, the library would be shelved with books that she had lost, and books she wanted to read, but never got around to. Her neighbors would be old friends- how she remembered them best. They would hug each other after being so distant and they would marvel at how great it felt to be together again.

Her memory, which was once so broken and hazy, is now lucid and solid. She feels its weight and the barren trees are now full of leaves, with faces of former lovers and friends poking out. Some are staring with sadness and accusations, while others have moved on. And still, there are the blank faces.

She stands feeling naked and cold, like the simple drawing of a woman's figurine in all that white space.

The dog, recognizing the state of her owner, says; let's go find a really Good Man, who will take care of the garden and will remember where you left your keys. He will buy you your favorite Mexican candy from the liquor store and will also remember your love for old leather and the Ballet.

Let's go inside, she said.

How is it that she can want such newness in her life and nothing at all?

She walks into the kitchen and opens the refrigerator door. Her husband walks in and she is still standing there, staring at its contents as if though somewhere inside, there was a map to that foreign city.

Entry #164: Brain Science

Memory Exercise #2:
"My memory isn't that great anymore."

"There are two things at work here. Your brain worked hard to block out A. Unfortunately, it is not so great at being selective, so gone also is B,C, and D. Another reason is that you haven't been sleeping."

Entry #152: Viktor & Rolf Missing Restraint & Knowledge?

Ahh... a quote to live by for the young designer in training:

"[Designs]...would be more successful if the designers were a little less intent on having a good time. Just because a scheme's wacky and off-the-wall some of the young designers think it is FUN, in big letters, when in fact their very determination to be zany renders the result lifeless. What's missing is restraint and knowledge. What's missing is the Zen of seeing." -Albert Hadley

Viktor & Rolf's Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren placed the word "Dream" (in big letters) front and center. They did not think outside of their boxy letters? I wasn't moved.

Entry #170: Love you Live

I feel like that coat you wear in the early Los Angeles morning-- by noon you are ready to shed shed shed it off because it clings and and sticks to your armpits and makes you conscious of the sweat, heat, and fever that is forming.

I am getting tired so I hope that made sense.

Entry #168: You know, you know.

Newspapers aren’t getting enough love these days with that other medium’s ability to report breaking news faster than your high-speed cable can keep up. The Death of the Paper is an often talked about event in newspaper circles and I too was almost ready to mourn the lost of an era but something telling started to happen.

Network cables’ ineptitude at verification of facts started to surface. Even conservative online versions of the newspaper made false, somewhat deceptive claims, including The Wall Street Journal (ok, the only conservative paper I actually like to read). This up to the second, in yo face homie, breaking news reporting is really made for readers who like the thrill of not really knowing, or readers who in their younger days picked at daisies and recited “loves me so” to “loves me not.”

The paper, on the other hand—is akin to the wise old man who takes a thoughtful look and deep breath before finally speaking deliberately. These are the facts, and I stick by them, he seems to be telling the readers (without a cowboy twang).

But I’m a news junkie. So I follow the thrill of the newsroom. And urhm, I pick at daisies!

And I think all of this yearning for the paper is really just me wishing wishing wishing for self actualization of some sort. If this makes sense, then we belong side by side, like two apples in a fruit basket “hoping for the best for each other.” 1

Today’s Headlines:
NYT: Killing of Sunni militia cause of consternation for America—the militia is a key component of their Plan to Decrease Violence in Iraq.

LA Times: Presidential polls- blaaaah. Good ol HillBill are leading nationwide and the GOP seems even more confused than them Dems.

Wall Street Journal: Influx at the Gaza (national headline) and the stock market

Washington Post: The swingin stock market and wtf are we to do?

USA Today:
76 colleges have over 1 billion in endowment so why aren’t they spending like they should on scholarships and other improvements?!

Entry #159: PreFab, I remember yoooou!!

Is Prefab Fab? MoMA Plans a Show

An article in the NY Times talks about the rise of Prefab homes in the high end sector of the housing market...

Unfortunately, there is little data to back up this evidence as although there are shows that exhibit prefab homes, and many designers offer a wonderfully modern take on Prefab homes-- the actual building of it remains disappointingly low.**

** Santa Monica offers a tour of Prefab homes in the area.

Entry #110: Eco-snob

The marketing of environmentalism has bred a new culture of consumers who buy environmentally friendly products, organic foods, and Toyota Priuses in order to portray an upper class status, according to observations made by my environmental blog. Green-friendly is the new designer-label, with economist Milton Friedman declaring that “green is the new red, white, and blue.” (I think he means black).

My fear is that separating environmentalism by social class will widen the gap between the haves and have-nots, and trivializes the movement down to the ability to obtain products.

The health industry has already experienced the exploitive nature that is involved in marketing strategies taken on by food giants. According to one interoffice memo, consumers who eat Frito-lays, Doritos, soft drinks, and other well known junk food companies are your middle to low income minority groups. Yet, companies continued to portray White, upper middle Americans in their ads, an ad executive observed astutely.

Ad agencies then worked to change the faces of many snack companies to better reflect their consumers, showing Hispanic and African Americans in more of their commercials and print ads. This brilliant marketing insight to take the flip side of the health conscious consumer has reaped record sales for junk food companies. It has also, however, contributed to the level of obesity and obesity related problems of the middle and lower class. (This statement deserves a paper…which I wrote—except it was in Spanish.)

Environmentalism will likely suffer the same fate if consumers base their environmental track on how often they shop at Whole Foods, or whether or not they have a “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” tote. Companies have already exploited the label of “environmentalist,” with an influx of “organic” labels on skin products and laundry detergent—when in reality there is no government oversight over the use of the word “organic” for these products (only exists for food).

(I went on a bird walk at the South Coast Botanical Gardens & it just made me think about the future of environmentalism with record sales of environmental shirts but low volunteer turn-out).

Entry #98: The great and the horrific

I am appalled by the Supreme Court! We need a Warren, right quick. Fantastic article in the New Yorker.

On a different note... this is on my wish list (along with the iphone... which one, which one??)...

Entry #84: Forever 21 turns 12 by 12

Fast Fashion Retailer Forever 21 has a new line of stores set to launch called Twelve by Twelve. The pieces are priced above the Forever 21 price point, but well below department stores at nothing more than $100/piece. They are said to be made of higher quality, more detailed designs, and much more fashion forward- meant for the 30 somethings which are really the 20 somethings that follow the "young Hollywood" crowd. The website launches at the end of this month. So far, they have done very well, according to market research, in which these higher quality pieces were placed within the Forever 21 Store. The name is a play on their namesake, of course, but they also have 12 designers and they are on the 12th floor of some building. I counted the building downtown- not even 12 stories- therefore they must mean the one in China where, you know- women are making 12 cents a day.

Entry #81: Downtown Living + a sad realization

All that searching and looking and having nothing feel right or priced right finally lead me to a place that felt comfortable + livable.

I signed a lease today to live at The Brewery Art Colony. The above picture= the building I'm in. The place is fabulous and was passed on to me by a friend who had first peaked my interest in shoe design. It is well known for their twice yearly Art Walk.

And it's less than 20 minutes away from work.

pssst! There seems to be space for some rooftop gardening...

The day, however, was marred by the realization that my price point for the clothes I make is way too low, considering the time, cost of material, & overhead.

My fingers need to stop typing & start cutting (the most annoying part of design, says I).

Entry #80: Semi-secret Show, snip, snip.

Happily Ever After duo Matt & Kim are having a show tonight (go now!) in the good old LBC (Esther Ave + Santa Fe). It's in a semi-shoddy part of town so they definitely have street cred.

But alas, tonight I'm @ the hiz-ouse, peelin potatos and milking cows: i.e. pattern-cutting! The vast amounts of fabric I've ruined because of my poor shearing abilities has me downtown touchin' and violatin' fabrics on a daily basis. This little trek has me practicing my Spanish skills with fabric/textile makers. My curiosity about the beginnings (you see, the silkworm...) will eventually get me to a holier than thou place.

God, can ya save me?
God --> no
doctor --> maybe
pharmacist --> yes
And down the food chain we go.

Entry #79: State of Suspended Animation, Complete Rapture

Yesterday I was posed the question: Are kittens the new owl?

Completely.

In other news, I'm in L-to-the-O-V-E with Dries Van Noten and his fantastic Spring/Summer 08 (yes, 2008) line. The heroin chic look is soooo-x 2004-2008 (and on).

Nomenus Quarterly is a new fashion magazine set to launch July 1st. 300! pages. An article entitled Forever Young is an ode to, what else- nostalgia. (You can read it online, but will have to go through a series of flash- yuck). Not exactly a new theme in the realm of nonfiction and something Cabinet Magazine did a better take on.

As you can see, I completely lied regarding the title. Not enough swooning on my end. Perhaps it will happen on June 9 and 10, when I trek to the Cooper Design Space + New Mart for their Designers + Agents event.

Please say yes and whatever you do, don't feed the models.

Entry #48: Ways in Which Nonverbal Messages Interact

I don't deserve all this nonverbal communication given to me by el amor de mi vida.

Speaking of hearts, I googled that mess and came across this medical university website and received a quick dose of dopamine with the image below.

I recently put in my two weeks notice, with thoughts of Africa dancing in my head. Fortunately, the environmental company I work at, will be keeping me on as a consultant.
